Scotsman 02

This was the first stage: spray painting. I’ve not used spray paints before but it was the best way to get a rough idea of where the colours would be. It was also the easiest way to get a base colour for the largest areas without spending ages with a paintbrush and waiting for it to dry.

Shown here is the dark green, light green (which ran out), silver and gloss mocha. Also the off-white I painted on for the shirt. The blank area is the spot where the sporran would hang marked out in marker.

Next was painting the ever difficult skin tone (it’s been a while since I painted- had to think back to highschool art class for that). The first rendition made the Scotsman look quite sunburnt, so the second was lighter.

This actually ended up being a good shading effect so I’m very happy with how it turned out. The whites of the eyes were also drawn in (I know it looks scary right now but the irises will come later).

Lotta work done in this one and boy does it look better. The blue of the irises were added as well as some highlights and texture for the hair. The brown for the leather belts was also done and some black paint was mixed into that for the colour of the dagger scabbards.

The paint for the hair was diluted a bit with water and I didn’t expect the results to turn out as well as they did.

Adding the details to the tartan… oh boy.

No, there is no particular tartan I used as reference, it was mostly what colour combination could I use? This took a while, but it was fun to do and the results are better than I thought they would be.

The cloak is dark green with red. The kilt is bright green, dark green, yellow and red. The stockings are bright green and dark green with red at the top.

Final step was to get a marker and outline the Scotsman.

I did a thicker line around the edges and thinner for details, as well as some last-minute black paint for the galoshes (shoes).

The sporran in the top left of the first picture was painted so the pattern on the kilt would line up with the rest of it. I was given another illustration from the book from earlier as a reference for the sporran.

All done. The next post will have a better photo of the final product.
